Living Root Bridges
Living Root Bridges are exclusive to Meghalaya in the whole world. The stem roots of a species of Indian Rubber Tree- botanical name Ficus Elastica- are trained over 20 to 25 years to form these living bridges to cross fast flowing rivers and streams. Some of these bio-engineering wonders are 53 feet, 70 feet and 100 feet long. The Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat has two levels. They are very strong, can carry many people at a time and perhaps can last 500 years or more. They grow in strength by the day. These bridges are reachable on foot throughout the year and are used by villagers everyday.
Mr. DP Rayen of Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort, had named and promoted these Living Wonders since the year 2000. The southern valleys of Khasi Hills are estimated to have about 80 such Living Bridges. They have been featured in many Television Documentaries including the BBC Network, Asahi TV Japan, Discovery TV and many domestic and international networks.
