The jungles around Cherrapunji are home to a variety of avian life. The state Meghalaya is home to over 600 species of birds.

Although there is an abundant variety of birds in Meghalaya, their numbers are very few owing to the rampant hunting over the ages and loss of habitat to deforestation. The birds native the place are very shy and are difficult to spot as they hid behind foliage from fear of Khasi slingshots and bird traps called riam sim.

However, bird watchers can spot much easier during winter months when migratory birds from the North; all the way from Serbia & Mongolia. During these months you can spot may migratory birds and rare birds such as Dark Rumped Swift, Green Cochoa, Crested Finchbill, Blue winged Laughing Thrush, Tawny Breasted Wren Babbler, Great Barbet, Blue-throated Barbet, Long-tailed Broadbill.
